This movement is the suitcase deadlift. When performed properly, this will train the athlete to maintain core stability and to prevent excess lateral flexion. Things to watch out for are making sure the athlete chooses a weight that allows them to stand straight up rather than leaning too far to one side, and to make sure the athlete maintains a neutral spine through the entire range of motion. This can be done with kettle bells, dumbbells, or a barbell.
