Block Starts: Set Up for Hurdle Block Starts
This video teaches a hurdler how to set up blocks for a hurdle start appropriately. The athlete sets the front of the base of the blocks approximately one foot from the start line. The athlete takes two steps, heel to toe, from the start line to measure the distance for the block of the front foot. The athlete takes three steps, heel to toe, from the start line to measure the distance for the block of the back foot. The angle of the block will be based on personal preference, but it is recommended to set the blocks at a lower angle. It is important for a hurdle start that most athletes will take 8 steps to the first hurdle. Some athletes may need to alternate the position of their feet in the blocks to adjust in getting to the first hurdle correctly. The athlete will then make sure the blocks are faced directly down the track in the middle of their lane. It is important for an athlete to have the blocks lined up and squared up prior to the block start for hurdles.
